Exact definitions for the terms and numbers Sapling puts on screen. Every value here is the one the product actually uses.

Knowledge graph

One node per concept in a course, joined by an edge when learning one depends on the other. Nodes are positioned by unit, so the shape of the graph is the shape of the syllabus.

NodeA single concept, such as AVL rotations. Its radius grows with how central it is to the course.
EdgeA prerequisite link. Recursion feeds trees, dynamic programming, and graph traversal, so it carries three edges out.
Cross-unit edgeAn edge between two different units. Drawn fainter, and the most common cause of a surprise on an exam.
Class nodeThe hub at the centre of the graph. It represents the course itself and connects to every unit root.

Mastery tiers

Every node carries a mastery score from 0 to 1, drawn as a ring around it. The score moves on demonstrated understanding, not time spent.

Mastered0.75 – 1.00You have demonstrated it more than once. Quizzes spend few questions here.
Learning0.40 – 0.74Partly there. Reviews are scheduled and the tutor still probes it.
Struggling0.01 – 0.39Repeated misses. Study guides weight this concept the heaviest.
Unexplored0.00Seen in your documents but never practised. No score yet.

Spaced review

After each card you rate your recall, and that rating sets when the card comes back. Rating a card also writes to the mastery score of the concept it tests.

Tutor modes

Three ways to work the same concept. All three are grounded in documents you uploaded, and none of them will hand over an answer.

SocraticAsks the question that gets you to the answer yourself, and escalates its hints only when you stall.
ExpositoryExplains the concept directly, structured and cited back to the specific pages it came from.
TeachBackYou explain the concept and it names the step you skipped. Mastery gained here is worth more than reading.

Ingestion

What happens to a file after you drop it in. Each step is visible in the product, so you can always see why a concept or a date exists.

01ReadText is extracted page by page, including OCR for scans and photos of handwritten notes.
02ChunkThe document is split by type. A syllabus is split by week, a lecture deck by slide, so context stays intact.
03Scan conceptsEvery concept named in the material becomes a node, joined to the concepts it depends on.
04Fan outThe same pass produces flashcards, quiz questions, and dated calendar entries, all pointing back at their source.

Grade scale

Category weights come from your syllabus, and every score rolls into one weighted number. These are the letter bands it maps onto.

Your data

Uploads, notes, and messages are encrypted at rest with AES-256.
Your material is used to build your graph and study tools, and is never sold or used to train outside models.
Delete a document and the concepts, cards, and dates derived from it go with it.
